Alcohol and atherosclerosis Anais da ABC (AABC)
DA LUZ,PROTASIO L.; COIMBRA,SILMARA R..
Atherosclerosis is manifested as coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with reduction of CAD complications. Apparently, red wine offers more benefits than any other kind of drinks, probably due to flavonoids. Alcohol alters lipoproteins and the coagulation system. The flavonoids induce vascular relaxation by mechanisms that are both dependent and independent of nitric oxide, inhibits many of the cellular reactions associated with atherosclerosis and inflammation, such as endothelial expression of vascular adhesion molecules and release of cytokines from polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Hypertension is also influenced by the alcohol intake. Thus, heavy alcohol intake is...

Association of sulfur dioxide exposure with circulatory system deaths in a medium-sized city in Brazil BJMBR
Amancio,C.T.; Nascimento,L.F.C..
There is a demonstrable association between exposure to air pollutants and deaths due to cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this study was to estimate the effects of exposure to sulfur dioxide on mortality due to circulatory diseases in individuals 50 years of age or older residing in São José dos Campos, SP. This was a time-series ecological study for the years 2003 to 2007 using information on deaths due to circulatory disease obtained from Datasus reports. Data on daily levels of pollutants, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone, temperature, and humidity were obtained from the São Paulo State Environmental Agency. Moving average models for 2 to 7 days were calculated by Poisson regression using the R software. Exposure to SO2 was...

Cerebral infarction related to cryptococcal meningitis in an HIV-infected patient: case report and literature review BJID
Leite,Andréa Gurgel Batista; Vidal,José E.; Bonasser Filho,Francisco; Nogueira,Roberta Schiavon; Oliveira,Augusto César Penalva de.
Neurological dysfunction as the first manifestation of AIDS has been found in 10 to 20% of symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infections. However, stroke has rarely been reported in AIDS patients. The most common causes of cerebral infarction in AIDS are central nervous system infections: toxoplasmosis, cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis. Potential vascular mechanisms for cerebral infarction and transient neurological deficits among AIDS patients include deposition of antigen-antibody complexes with vasculitis and infarction, and a direct toxic effect of a viral antigen or infectious agent on vascular endothelium. The role of cryptococcal meningitis in vasculopathy is still not clear. We report a case of cerebral infarction in an HIV-infected...

Effects of Vitamin K1 Supplementation on the Risk Factors to the Stroke and on Memory in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats Stroke Prone (SHR-sp) BABT
Cavargere,Victor Agati; Guimarães,Marcela Rodrigues Moreira; Murad,Leonardo Borges; Chaves,Amanda; Vianna,Lucia Marques.
A number of risk factors have been associated to the stroke and many strategies have been proposed in order to control them as well. Vitamin K has been largely found in brain, which suggests a possible function at that tissue. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of this vitamin on the prevention of risk factors to stroke and on cognitive function on SHRSP rats. Twelve SHRSP males, 15 weeks old, were divided into two groups (n= 6 each), receiving the vehicle-coconut oil (control group) or 40 μg of phylloquinone (treated group) during 28 days. Biological parameters, systolic blood pressure and lipid profile were evaluated. Both groups were submitted to the neurological tasks. The data was treated by Student's t test and ANOVA one-way test being...

miR-22 and cerebral microbleeds in brainstem and deep area are associated with depression one month after ischemic stroke BJMBR
Hu,Jia; Zhou,Wei; Zhou,Zhiming; Yang,Qian; Xu,Junfeng; Dong,Wanli.
In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship among miR-22, deep cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), and post-stroke depression (PSD) 1 month after ischemic stroke. We consecutively recruited 257 patients with first-ever and recurrent acute cerebral infarction and performed PSD diagnosis in accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV criteria for depression. Clinical information, assessments of stroke severity, and imaging data were recorded on admission. We further detected plasma miR-22 using quantitative PCR and analyzed the relationship among miR-22, clinical data, and PSD using SPSS 23.0 software. Logistic regression showed that deep (OR=1.845, 95%CI: 1.006-3.386, P=0.047) and brain stem CMBs (OR=2.652, 95%CI: 1.110–6.921, P=0.040), as...

Neuronal and endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene knockout mice BJMBR
Huang,P.L..
Targeted disruption of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) genes has led to knockout mice that lack these isoforms. These animal models have been useful to study the roles of nitric oxide (NO) in physiologic processes. nNOS knockout mice have enlarged stomachs and defects in the inhibitory junction potential involved in gastrointestinal motility. eNOS knockout mice are hypertensive and lack endothelium-derived relaxing factor activity. When these animals are subjected to models of focal ischemia, the nNOS mutant mice develop smaller infarcts, consistent with a role for nNOS in neurotoxicity following cerebral ischemia. In contrast, eNOS mutant mice develop larger infarcts, and show a more pronounced...

Physical exercise prevents motor disorders and striatal oxidative imbalance after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion BJMBR
Sosa,P.M.; Schimidt,H.L.; Altermann,C.; Vieira,A.S.; Cibin,F.W.S.; Carpes,F.P.; Mello-Carpes,P.B..
Stroke is the third most common cause of death worldwide, and most stroke survivors present some functional impairment. We assessed the striatal oxidative balance and motor alterations resulting from stroke in a rat model to investigate the neuroprotective role of physical exercise. Forty male Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups: a) control, b) ischemia, c) physical exercise, and d) physical exercise and ischemia. Physical exercise was conducted using a treadmill for 8 weeks. Ischemia-reperfusion surgery involved transient bilateral occlusion of the common carotid arteries for 30 min. Neuromotor performance (open-field and rotarod performance tests) and pain sensitivity were evaluated beginning at 24 h after the surgery. Rats were euthanized and the...

Predictive factors of subjective sleep quality and insomnia complaint in patients with stroke: implications for clinical practice Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROCHA,PATRÍCIA C. DA; BARROSO,MARINA T.M.; DANTAS,ANA AMÁLIA T.S.G.; MELO,LUCIANA P.; CAMPOS,TANIA F..
The complaints regarding sleep problems have not been well identified after a stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors of sleep quality and insomnia complaints in patients with stroke. A total of 70 subjects, 40 patients (57 ± 7 years) and 30 healthy controls (52 ± 6 years) assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Sleep Habits Questionnaire took part in the study. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test, the Student's t-test and logistic regression analysis. On average, the patients showed poor sleep quality (patients: 6.3 ± 3.5; controls: 3.9 ± 2.2; p= 0.002) and insomnia complaint was the most prevalent (patients: 37.5%; controls: 6.7%; p= 0.007). The absence of insomnia complaint (OR= 0.120;...

Three-dimensional kinematic analysis of upper and lower limb motion during gait of post-stroke patients BJMBR
Carmo,A.A.; Kleiner,A.F.R.; Costa,P.H. Lobo da; Barros,R.M.L..
The aim of this study was to analyze the alterations of arm and leg movements of patients during stroke gait. Joint angles of upper and lower limbs and spatiotemporal variables were evaluated in two groups: hemiparetic group (HG, 14 hemiparetic men, 53 ± 10 years) and control group (CG, 7 able-bodied men, 50 ± 4 years). The statistical analysis was based on the following comparisons (P ≤ 0.05): 1) right versus left sides of CG; 2) affected (AF) versus unaffected (UF) sides of HG; 3) CG versus both the affected and unaffected sides of HG, and 4) an intracycle comparison of the kinematic continuous angular variables between HG and CG. This study showed that the affected upper limb motion in stroke gait was characterized by a decreased range of motion of the...
